how to teach Sit

Let's begin with teaching our dogs the 'sit' command. This is usually the first cue we teach our dogs, and it often becomes the most rewarded behavior they learn. Puppies learn this command quickly because they naturally assume this position to better see our faces, especially since they are so small.

Begin with the Food Lure we practiced in Week One, placing the food near the puppy's nose and gradually moving it upwards towards the ceiling. Allow the puppy to nibble on the food while keeping his head raised until he naturally sits down. Once he is seated, give him the food, then quickly use your Clicker or Release Word before he stands up on his own.

...and down

Down is easier taught after the dog can be lured into a sit. From the sitting position, use the Food Lure to guide the dog's nose very slowly towards the floor. Let the dog nibble the food as you lure them closer to the ground. Slowly begin to draw the lure horizontally across the floor so the dog is reaching for it. If the dog pops up from sitting, start over.

If your dog is struggling to keep his bum on the floor you can try this method: hold one forearm parallel and just about a foot from the floor. Use your other hand to lure the dog from under your forearm so that he must crouch to reach. Let him nibble the food under there and try to draw him forward. Your forearm will create a barrier that will help your dog get into the down position.
